Nursing Department
I'm on blood thinners and/or aspirin. What should I do?
In order to have better control with bleeding, we may ask for you to speak to your prescribing MD for clearance to stop your blood thinner (Coumadin, Warfarin, Coumarin) 3 days prior to surgery and discontinue aspirin and all non-steroidal anti-inflammation drugs 10 days prior to your Mohs Micrographic procedure. Again, before stopping any blood thinning medication, we request you check with your prescribing physician for clearance to stop these medications.
What kind of anesthesia will you be using?
We use local anesthesia (lidocaine) for all biopsies and the Mohs Micrographic procedure. Some patients undergoing a surgical procedure may be asked NOT to eat or drink after midnight. If this has been requested of you, please follow the directions given.
How long will the Mohs Micrographic procedure take?
The Mohs Micrographic procedure will take a minimum of 45 minutes up to several hours based on the size of the lesion. We request patients having a surgical procedure bring a driver with them to drive them home after surgery.
Why do I need a reconstructive surgeon?
Some patients who are undergoing the Mohs Micrographic procedure may be scheduled to see a reconstructive surgeon to repair the defect caused by the removal of cancer for the best cosmetic and/or functional result. Arkansas Dermatology works closely with several excellent plastic and reconstructive surgeons.
What do I do in case of an emergency?
If you are experiencing a true emergency, please call 911 immediately for help. Each patient that undergoes a surgical procedure will receive a post-operative care instruction sheet. This sheet will have a pager number listed at the bottom for patients to call in the event they are experiencing any difficulties that are not considered life threatening.
